Stop Snoring – 8 Strategies

Face it: you don’t want to be the one snoring, nor the one listening to the snoring sleeper.  Sure, it’s something that’s embarrassing, but it can really be dangerous to your health.  Luckily, there are various ways to stop snoring.  Here are 8 strategies.

8 Tips to Stop Snoring

1. First, if you want to stop snoring, then prop up your head when you sleep.  Your head can rest on a pillow or pillows that accomplish this.  If you’re able to, get a bed that adjusts to do this.  You can try a semi-sitting position if you can do so comfortably.

2. If you use a pill to help you sleep, or some other substance, then you can expect to snore.  For instance, liquor or beer, sleeping aids, or even antihistamines can cause your muscles to be so relaxed that your tongue can slip back into your throat and block your airway.  Don’t do this if you want to sleep quietly.

3. Something many don’t realize is that dairy products can cause the problem.  What happens is that dairy products will increase mucous to build up and thicken, leading to snoring.

4. If you are overweight, then this can also be a culprit that leads to snoring.  Research has shown a link between being overweight to a blocked airway, again leading to the problem of snoring and possibly the more dangerous sleep apnea.

Try to Stop Snoring by Changing Yourself

5. If you have trouble snoring, then you can try to sleep propped on your side.  This position opens the airway.  The problem of rolling onto your back can be solved in an ingenious way.  Try tying or sewing a tennis ball to the back of your shirt!  Really, the mere discomfort of rolling onto the tennis ball will cause you to sleep on your side and you can be on your way to stop snoring.

6. Prevent yourself from eating big meals just prior to heading for sleep.  This practice – eating before bed – will cause your stomach contents to press on your diaphragm.  This action will limit the opening of your airway.

7. If you are congested, or otherwise have a build-up of mucous, then you may find yourself snoring.  The fact is, you can prevent congestion with the use of a steam-producing humidifier, or a cool mist humidifier, in order to keep your throat moist and help you to breathe.

8. If you are a smoker, this can also lead to snoring.  The reason for this is a sleeping pattern that is erratic.  Since quitting smoking is no easy feat, just try not to light up right before you go to sleep.  The effect smoke has on the throat is to inflame the tissue and cause a mild obstruction of the airway, so if you stop smoking you may stop snoring.
